In 2008, India entered the select club of countries capable of placing a satellite in orbit around the Moon: the Chandrayaan-1. But that was not enough for the thriving Asian power: its objective was to land on the lunar surface itself, like decades before the Apollo missions had done.
To do this, the Hindu space agency ISRO initially joined the Russians to start a joint mission that allowed an uncrewed moon landing. But the Russians withdrew from the project after the failure of their Phobos-Grunt mission in 2011, and the Hindus decided to move forward alone.
After several postponements of the mission, which initially should have been carried out in 2018 (on the tenth anniversary of the launch of the Chandrayaan-1), the Chandrayaan-2 mission was launched last July. This probe carried a lunar module called Vikram (in honor of the founder of the Hindu space program Vikram Sarabhai, now deceased).
What Happened Yesterday?
The descent of the Vikram ship (of 1500 kg, plus the 27 kg of the Pragyan rover) began a few minutes after 10 pm. , from an altitude of 30 km above the surface of our satellite (in the Apollo missions this distance was only 15 km).
The landing zone planned for Vikram was located between the Simpelius N and Manzinus C craters, near the lunar South Pole. But shortly after starting the second phase of the descent, reaching 2.1 km in height (around 10:20 pm), the expected path of the Vikram was altered :
At that time the ship’s signal was also lost. By itself, this incident would not have been worrisome, because the moon landing procedure is programmed, not requiring connection to the Earth. But he did not recover at any time and, at this time, the Vikram is considered lost, considering it crashed against the lunar surface. This failure represents a blow to the public coffers of India ( although it has invested in this mission a smaller amount than the budget of ‘Interstellar’ ) and for its reputation as a space power, but also for science, for the scientific evidence that Vikram and Pragyan would have performed in the polar zone of the Moon.
There is also the circumstance that this year two other moon landing attempts have been carried out by Asian nations : China (which last January managed to land successfully on the hidden side of our satellite with its mission Change 4 ) and Israel (in this case the Beresheet, like now the Vikram, crashed during the landing ).
