Android 12 Now Can Turn Off 2G Network, For Device Security

Android 12 was officially launched in October 2021 and several OEMs have pushed the availability of this new mobile operating system to a number of their eligible smartphone and tablet devices.

While features like Material You and widget enhancements have caught the attention of many, other recent additions seem to have gone unnoticed by the public. This feature is Android 12’s ability to turn off 2G networks on smartphones and was only revealed a few days ago.

A tweet from Mishaal Rahman’s Twitter account said that a change was found in Android 12 in the form of an option to turn off 2G networks on smartphones. Google apparently quietly rolled out the feature late last year, which allows users to increase the security of their devices at the touch of a button. This feature also received a warm welcome.

In some countries, many telecommunications providers have turned off the availability of 2G networks (following the next 3G), but most smartphones still have 2G modems and continue to try to connect to the nearest 2G signal, and this is the source of the problem.

Launched back in 1991, this outdated service has many vulnerabilities, and its security is outdated. For example, the encryption capability between the 2G tower and the device is very weak, and this results in a network that can be easily breached, to intercept text messages and calls. Another problem is the lack of authentication from tower to device, which allows for fake 2G towers, simulating cellular sites, which can also be a source of eavesdropping.

Even though the average smartphone currently uses a 4G network that is safer, under certain conditions, the smartphone network can change to 2G, especially when the 4G network is very weak, so smartphones also have the vulnerabilities brought by the 2G network.

So, if you want to protect your smartphone and data, the best way is to turn off the 2G network, which is available in the latest version of Android 12, as suggested by Google.

However, not all devices with the latest Android 12 version can use this feature. At a minimum, the device requires an update on Radio HAL to version 1.6 or later, which many Android devices (especially those released still with Android 11 or earlier) don’t provide it, due to requirements issues with Google Requirement Freeze (GRF). If your device is one of them, then you cannot turn off the 2G network with this new feature.

However, the latest smartphone devices that ship with Android 12, including the latest Pixel and Samsung smartphones, will be able to take advantage of this feature. To turn off the 2G network, go to the Settings → Network and Internet → SIMs → Allow 2G page and slide the available switch.

Tips and Ways to Make Android Storage Not Full

There are quite a number of applications and games on Android phones that have a large enough capacity, not only applications but the photo and video files can also increase your Android’s memory capacity, moreover, your phone’s camera has large pixels. the larger the file size and the resulting photos.

Where all that can make our cell phone storage full faster and of course it will affect the speed of an android phone.

To anticipate things like that, here are tips and ways you can do to avoid android phone storage from not filling up quickly.

1. Clear App Cache

Every app and game on an Android phone will generate a cache every time it is used, and this cache will be stored in your phone’s internal memory. The more often you use an application, the more cache it generates.

And if this is allowed to increase and burden the storage capacity of your Android phone.

From my personal experience, the cache of the browser can generate a cache of up to 1.5 Gb. Therefore, to avoid full storage, you should regularly clean the app cache on your phone.

To clear the cache you can go to the Settings menu > Applications > select the application to delete the cache, for example here I will give an example to delete the Facebook cache application, click Storage and click Clear Cache

2. Take advantage of Cloud Storage

Currently, there are many free cloud storage applications, one of which is Google Drive. Take advantage of this to move your photo or video files, in addition to increasing your storage capacity, this method can also indirectly secure your files in the phone’s memory.

Don’t forget to delete files in the internal memory, after you move photos or other files to Google Drive, in order to get optimal efficiency.

3. Move Some Files to PC/Laptop or External Hard Drive

If you feel that using cloud storage is consuming money, then you can move some of your data to a PC/Laptop or external hard drive.

Because we can’t deny every day the storage on Android phones will continue to grow.

Even if you use the Clean Memory application, it is not an optimal solution and is temporary.

4. Delete the contents of the Download Folder

If you download on your android phone often enough, don’t forget to clean downloaded files that are no longer used.

You can use File Manager for this.

5. Install the SD Card and Move Some Data and Files There

If the four methods above you feel are still not effective, you can use additional memory such as an SD Card or Micro SD, once installed you can move some files there.
