Android 12 Now Can Turn Off 2G Network, For Device Security

Android 12 was officially launched in October 2021 and several OEMs have pushed the availability of this new mobile operating system to a number of their eligible smartphone and tablet devices.

While features like Material You and widget enhancements have caught the attention of many, other recent additions seem to have gone unnoticed by the public. This feature is Android 12’s ability to turn off 2G networks on smartphones and was only revealed a few days ago.

A tweet from Mishaal Rahman’s Twitter account said that a change was found in Android 12 in the form of an option to turn off 2G networks on smartphones. Google apparently quietly rolled out the feature late last year, which allows users to increase the security of their devices at the touch of a button. This feature also received a warm welcome.

In some countries, many telecommunications providers have turned off the availability of 2G networks (following the next 3G), but most smartphones still have 2G modems and continue to try to connect to the nearest 2G signal, and this is the source of the problem.

Launched back in 1991, this outdated service has many vulnerabilities, and its security is outdated. For example, the encryption capability between the 2G tower and the device is very weak, and this results in a network that can be easily breached, to intercept text messages and calls. Another problem is the lack of authentication from tower to device, which allows for fake 2G towers, simulating cellular sites, which can also be a source of eavesdropping.

Even though the average smartphone currently uses a 4G network that is safer, under certain conditions, the smartphone network can change to 2G, especially when the 4G network is very weak, so smartphones also have the vulnerabilities brought by the 2G network.

So, if you want to protect your smartphone and data, the best way is to turn off the 2G network, which is available in the latest version of Android 12, as suggested by Google.

However, not all devices with the latest Android 12 version can use this feature. At a minimum, the device requires an update on Radio HAL to version 1.6 or later, which many Android devices (especially those released still with Android 11 or earlier) don’t provide it, due to requirements issues with Google Requirement Freeze (GRF). If your device is one of them, then you cannot turn off the 2G network with this new feature.

However, the latest smartphone devices that ship with Android 12, including the latest Pixel and Samsung smartphones, will be able to take advantage of this feature. To turn off the 2G network, go to the Settings → Network and Internet → SIMs → Allow 2G page and slide the available switch.

Evolving Malware: Dropper is around the corner on the Play Store

Evolving Malware

Malware also evolves, and they do so to evade the most recent and updated security systems that Google puts in defense of Android, the Play Store, and the applications contained therein.

The virtual store has always been a breeding ground for this type of danger, and despite the efforts conducted by the Mountain View experts, Android 13 has already fallen under attack by thieves.

The most used technique in recent times is that of malware dropper – which uses apparently harmless apps as they do not contain malicious code themselves – and therefore can pass Google checks without problems – but undermine the security of smartphones and of unsuspecting users by postponing the introduction of the malware at a later time, through a (fake) update to be completed through a bogus Play Store page with which the connection to accessibility services is made.

And, as often happens, banking apps and those belonging to the finance category are targeted. Threat Fabric confirms the increasingly frequent exploitation of this type of technique by identifying different apps on the Play Store that use it.

image:- hothardware

SharkBoat, for example, is a banking Trojan capable of stealing personal data and SMS (the latter especially to trace 2FA codes) and remotely taking control of the smartphone. One of the apps that hide it is Codice Fiscale 2022, downloaded in Italy thousands of times without users realizing its danger. It is used for the calculation of taxes, but in reality, its goal is anything but.

Once downloaded and opened, the app requests the download of an update from a fake Play Store, with which the malware is installed inside our smartphone. Easy to fall for it, because the page looks exactly the same as the original one.

The File Manager app also behaves in the same way and targets banks in Italy, the UK, Germany, Spain, Poland, Austria, Australia, and the United States.

There is not only SharkBoat as a dropper: Vultur, for example, is a banking trojan through which attackers can have access to remote screen streaming and record clicks and gestures, thus stealing the passwords filled in by the user.

In this case, the app update request (apparently harmless) takes place via a false Google Play warning: once authorization is given, the malware is downloaded. The apps identified are Recover Audio, Images & Videos, Zetter Authentication, and My Finances Tracker: the droppers are AES encrypted to hide the strings.

The “good news” is that manual user intervention is required for the malware to be installed – and this applies to both SharkBoat and Vultur.

The bad news, though, is that the fake websites that mimic the Play Store and the alerts are so similar to the originals that it’s easy to fall into the trap. The advice is always to check the URL with extreme care before proceeding and not to authorize updates from unknown sources.
