How to draw or write on a PDF

How to draw or write on a PDF

We show you the easiest and freeways you have to be able to write or draw in a PDF document, either to add your signature, mark notes, or work as a team on the same document.

Regardless of whether you are using an iPad or tablet , Windows PC, or Mac, we are going to show you the simplest ways you have so that you or your children can write or draw in a PDF document helped by free programs and software .

Conventional PDF reader programs do not make it easy to draw or write freehand on documents. Many, including Adobe’s Acrobat Reader, make it easy to highlight text or add your signature. Others will allow you to edit the document.

But sometimes, all you want is, for example, to draw in some areas of the document, either because you want to highlight some aspect, or because your children are doing their homework on their digital book.

So, we show you ways to convert your PDF documents into a form that you can easily edit. Many of them are based on the same essential principle: turn the PDF document into one or more images that you can later draw or write on.

In this article, we wanted to select completely free applications, but if you have a software or license for Photoshop, Acrobat, or a mobile application like Procreate, it is also easy to use.

We will start with the method used for iPad before moving on to another type of tablet or Windows and Mac computers.

Draw or write with your iPad in a PDF

The first step is to convert your PDF into an image or series of images. If your PDF is a single page, the easiest way to do it is to take a screenshot. To do this, simply press the top button and the home button, if your iPad has one, or the ‘Volume Up’ button if it doesn’t (like on the latest iPad Pro models).

If your PDF has multiple pages, it is probably easier to go through each page and take a screenshot.

It is also possible to use a site like pdf2jpg.net to convert your PDFs to JPG format, but you will have to download each JPEG by hand or download a ZIP file, and using ZIP files on iOS is painful as you cannot extract all files from just one time.

How to draw or write on a PDF

Once you have your images stored on a disk, you will need an art application. We recommend Autodesk Sketchbook as it’s free, has a great set of tools, and just as importantly it’s easy for adults and kids to use.

With it, it is possible to add notes to a document or letters or numbers to a worksheet. And if you want to be more artistic, Sketch has a great set of art tools for creating visual effects.

Draw or write with your tablet in a PDF

The workflow will be the same as with an iPad: Screenshot of each page (see how to do it depending on the model), then use the free Autodesk Sketchbook application for Android and be able to draw or write on the images.

If you are using an Amazon Fire tablet, you will need to use a different application, as Autodesk does not have a version of Sketch for that platform. Instead, an app like ArtFlow is good enough to be able to pull it off.

Draw or write with a Mac or PC on a PDF

The easiest way to achieve what you want if you are using a Mac or PC is to use Adobe Photoshop, as you can open PDF files directly in that application, choose which pages you want, or even open all of them as different layers or documents.

Now, Photoshop will cost you about € 10 per month after a 30-day trial. The subscription also includes the iPad version of Photoshop, but this cannot open PDF files.

Instead, as with iPads and tablets, the screen capture process can be your best way to create images that you can then draw on with the help of an art application like the ones we have seen above.

If you have a PDF with a multitude of pages, you can convert it for free into successive JPEG files with the help of the pdf2jpg.net tool. Once you have your screenshots, you will need an art app to write or draw on it.

Once again, the free Autodesk Sketchbook application in its version for macOS or Windows will be your best ally to finish your work or take notes.

Windows 11 Enterprise Virtual Machine Is Available!

If you are waiting for Windows 11 Enterprise, which contains a number of Enterprise-class features, of course, then the good news is here for you, because some time ago Microsoft finally released the Windows 11 version, even though it is still a virtual machine file.

The file consists of several different files according to the user’s preferred VM application preferences, there are VMWare, Hyper-V, VirtualBox and Parallels, and not only Windows 11 Enterprise but there are also a number of things that are included in this VM including:

  • Window 11 Enterprise (evaluation)
  • Windows 10 SDK, version 2004 (10.0.19041.0)
  • Visual Studio 2019 (latest as of 10/09/21) with the UWP, .NET desktop, and Azure workflows enabled and also includes the Windows Template Studio extension
  • Visual Studio Code (latest as of 10/09/21)
  • Windows Subsystem for Linux enabled with Ubuntu installed
  • Developer mode enabled
  • Windows Terminal installed

Still quoted from the Microsoft page, this VM package has an expiration date of January 9, 2022, not long, right?, of course, because this is the Evaluation version which as usual has a time limit of approximately 90 days.

Size and How to Download

As for the size itself, this VM package is around 17 – 20.5 GB in size, quite large indeed, because once again it includes a number of applications and even WSL with the Ubuntu distro.

As for how to download it, you can just go to the https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/downloads/virtual-machines/ page to download this Windows 11 Enterprise VM.

So if you’re curious, just try it, for the installation tutorial itself, I’ll make it in the next article. Thank you.

Windows 11 Insider Dev Channel Build 22504.1010 Released, Pipeline Testing Only

Previously, Microsoft released Windows 11 Insider build 22504 for Windows Insider Dev Channel users, in this build, there are a number of interesting new things, such as the redesign of the Your Phone application, and improvements to the Touch Keyboard feature.

Well, today, Microsoft is again providing the KB5008697 update for the Windows 11 version and this update will bring the OS to build to 22504.1010. Yep, if you look at this is an update that contains only pipeline testing and nothing new is added in this update.

“This update does not include anything new and is designed to test our servicing pipeline for builds in the Dev Channel.” Tulis Microsoft.

And according to what was quoted above, this update doesn’t bring anything in it, whether it’s fixes, new features or so on, because this update is only designed to do Pipeline testing, so you as Insiders can freely download or not at all.

Microsoft Releases WSL 0.50.2, Brings New Logo and Linux Kernel Update

To date, Windows Subsystem for Linux is one of the most important features for developers, because WSL provides a very useful compatibility layer that allows users to run Linux binaries natively on supported Windows devices, without having to download a virtual machine ( VMs) specifically.

Well, as we have previously reported, some time ago Microsoft presented WSL Preview in the Microsoft Store Windows 11, and of course with that users can more easily update WSL itself from the Microsoft Store page, and related to this, today Microsoft has launched a version preview 0.50.2 of WSL.

If you notice, in this version WSL brings a new penguin icon that is more colorful, besides that based on the changelog from WSL 0.50.2, this version also brings the Linux Kernel Version 5.10.74.3 update.

Microsoft Releases WSL 0.50.2, Brings New Logo and Linux Kernel Update

For the full changelog, you can just read it on the following GitHub page, but in general, of course, this update brings a number of good things for WSL users because after all there are many improvements presented.

Interested in giving it a try though, the update seems to be rolling out gradually, but if you want to get this update faster, you can download the associated MSIX package for the latest version of WSL on the following GitHub page.
